As a school teacher who has organised polo lessons for students of all ages and abilities over the last year, I cannot recommend it highly enough. My first group of students ranged in ability from competent riders with their own horses to nervous year 11 boys who had never sat on a horse and just wanted to "give it a go!" Within a few weeks all were cantering around confidently hitting the ball and were thoroughly hooked on polo.
My students grew in confidence both as polo players but more importantly their self confidence increased, they gelled as a group and I saw the younger pupils slowly come out of their shell. Now, the year 11 "beginner" boys have left school to go on to college and are playing with adults at the club.
Polo is almost exactly the opposite of how many people perceive it, as an exclusive past time which is the preserve of the very wealthy. Leadenham Polo Club is a hugely welcoming place where all the staff involved are completely committed to extending their love of the sport to everyone. Under the watchful eye of the coach, my students have slowly become completely addicted to this fast, exciting sport.
I would advise any teacher thinking of taking a school group to play polo to go for it, it will certainly give your students and yourself an experience they will never forget.
